This blog discusses how to react and handle a relapse from drug or alcohol addiction….if it happens.
Relapsing after putting so much hard work into being sober can be upsetting and frustrating. Below are 4 steps to help you deal with relapsing when it happens:
1. Don’t beat yourself up about it or get angry
It is very easy to let the frustration and emotion get the better of you, but it’s important to focus on the positives and believe there is always another chance for you to start again. There is always another chance at sobriety.
2. Reach out for support
Having a conversation and opening up to a close friend, especially a friend who is also in recovery, or a trusted family member, will be beneficial for your mindset. Talking it through with someone will help you come to terms with it.
3. Understand that this is your journey, and every journey is different
We are not all meant to be doing the same thing. Understand that this is your pathway and your recovery journey to sobriety. Don’t compare yourself to what other people are doing.
4. Seek help from a rehabilitation centre with a 12-step programme
The Sydney Retreat has a 30-day recovery programme that nurtures you and supports you every step of the way.
