The Sydney Retreat: transforming lives through compassionate, practical recovery

Many of our enquiries come from family members, partners and friends whose loved ones have a problem with drinking or drug use. Not only are they worried about the person who seems to be in a hopeless state because of their addiction, but they are uncertain about what to do and where to go for help.

For someone living in the horrors of alcoholism or addiction, it is one thing to want to stop, but knowing exactly how, is where most people come unstuck. Below, we explain what The Sydney Retreat does and how our program can provide you with help to stop drinking.

What is The Sydney Retreat?

The Sydney Retreat is a not for profit drug and alcohol treatment centre offering a 28 day residential program, so yes you would be staying with us for four weeks. At any one time we have up to twenty guests participating in our program. Our centre is modern and comfortable, the food is exceptional, and our dedicated and experienced staff will look after you.

It’s a safe and supportive place where you can focus on recovery and getting well without the day-to-day distractions and challenges you might experience if you were in your home environment.

At The Sydney Retreat, we transform the lives of alcoholics, addicts, and their families. Our approach is practical and grounded in real-life experience—this is not an academic exercise but a proven program of action, led by people who have walked this path and recovered.

What is the 28 day program at The Sydney Retreat?

There are three core parts to our program:

  1. Identifying the problem

One of the most important aspects of alcoholism is understanding the problem. Until you understand the problem and accept that you have it, it is difficult to accept the solution. Like cancer and diabetes, alcoholism is a chronic disease. Despite the stigma and misunderstanding which often surrounds alcoholism, it is not caused by a character flaw, a moral weakness or a shameful lack of willpower. It’s a disease. Those with alcoholism are sick and our program is about sick people getting better, not bad people getting good.

  1. Introducing the solution

So, the problem is that alcoholism is a chronic disease and like all chronic diseases there is no cure. However, those with alcoholism are fortunate because it is one of the most treatable of all chronic diseases. The solution lies in a program of action rooted in the 12 Steps. Our program is delivered by sober people with lived experience, not academics. Why? Because as they say, “You can tell an alcoholic, but you can’t tell them much.” Alcoholics are more inclined to listen to those who have been where they are and recovered themselves.

  1. Ongoing actions necessary to stay well

Alcoholism is cunning, baffling, and powerful—it is far too difficult to face alone. Recovery requires an ongoing network of support. At The Sydney Retreat, we connect you to a group of recovering people, from all walks of life, who will guide and encourage you through the ongoing practice of the 12 Steps and will continue to support you well after you leave The Sydney Retreat.

In our experience, people who leave The Sydney Retreat and follow the program of action we recommend, stay sober. However, if they return to their old habits and try to do it by themselves, they are often unsuccessful.

The Sydney Retreat sets guests up with the tools to embark on a new way of living – sober. If anyone tells you it will be easy, they’re wrong. But the program is simple and effective, if you’re willing to apply it to your life and lean in to the help on offer.
